Windischgarsten in the Pyhrn-Priel region is a place of diversity. In addition to cultural and gastronomic highlights, the town also offers countless leisure activities. Outdoor or indoor swimming pool, soccer pitch or beach volleyball court, skate park, tennis courts, asphalt tracks, climbing - pretty much everything is possible in the warm season. In winter, on the other hand, cross-country ski trails, ice skating and curling rinks or the nearby Wurzeralm and Hinterstoder ski areas are a delight.
In the past, it was a manor house for wire drawers and scythe smiths, today we can admire a museum with remarkable finds from Roman times in the building of the former "black counts". Our museum of local history also houses objects from rural and middle-class culture, tools used by woodcutters and craftsmen, an old classroom, a regional stone exhibition and much more (average visit time: approx. 1 hour).
The parish church of St. Jakob Windischgarsten was built in the 15th century and last renovated in 1992. Particularly worth seeing are the altars and the pulpit, the Marian chapel, the organ and the Schoiswohl cross, as well as the psalm path and the Lourdes grotto.
Every year on December 5th, mysterious figures gather in Windischgarsten for the so-called "Niglo parade", which has even been added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Many of the participating figures and their traditional costumes and masks can only be found here in the Garstner Valley.
The Wurbauerkogel is rightly called the "adventure mountain". The chairlift takes you up the mountain, where the panorama tower impresses with its 360° panoramic view of 21 two-thousand-metre peaks. There is also a great exhibition about the Kalkalpen National Park.
The Alpine Coaster, an all-weather Alpine roller coaster, awaits adventurous guests.
There are also three mountain bike trails in the new bike park - a flow trail (easy), a freeride trail (medium) and a downhill trail (difficult) - for real riders. As alternative programs, a 3D archery course and four via ferratas in difficulty levels A/B to D/E provide variety.
