  3. History

It was almost half a century ago, back in 1923, that the Sperlhof began its development from a former farm to today's Lebensfreude resort. The great-grandmother of the current owner Iris Mayr, Sophie Fahrnberger, inherited a small farm and married Alois Fahrnberger.

A bond that has shaped generations.

Lifelong relationships develop from encounters.

In order to supplement their meagre income, the couple emptied a small room and rented it out again and again to two Viennese families who came for years to spend the summer. These first Sperlhof guests, the Klimesch and Martin families, were very artistically engaged and painted many pictures that still adorn the Sperlhof today and remind us of those times.

Daughter Sophie, who married Franz Gössweiner, continued the family tradition. The foundation stone for this was laid during Franz's imprisonment in a military hospital in Paderborn during the Second World War, when he became friends with one of the Krupps and Mr. Josef Stahl, which marked the beginning of a lifelong relationship. The two steel barons introduced Franz Gössweiner and his summer retreat to the collieries, which from then on sent guests to the Sperlhof and financed these vacations for the colliery employees. Over time, this was joined by Protestant camps and vacations for employees of the Lower Austrian trade unions.

With heart and soul, great things are created from small things.

From a farm to an inviting hotel.

Franz and Sophie then built the first new rooms, a dining room and a snack bar. Gradually, the business developed steadily and more rooms were added. The combination of Franz as a charismatic host and Sophie as a great cook was the cornerstone of the Sperlhof's success and rise. Thanks to the active support of their six children, it was possible to develop the Sperlhof from a farm into a good hotel.

Whatever you can do or dream of doing - go for it. There is genius, power and magic in boldness.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Carried by the family spirit - still alive today.

Generations full of passion and joie de vivre.

Above all, Christa's hard work and passionate commitment quickly turned the Sperlhof into an oasis of well-being in the midst of relaxed natural beauty, with a penchant for enjoyment, relaxation and joie de vivre. 10 years ago, the next generational change took place. Our current boss Iris Mayr became more and more involved in the business at the age of just 21 and finally took over the management from her mother Christa, who can still be found around the hotel today as a good soul and enthusiastic hostess.

Iris and Herbert continue to live the Sperlhof family spirit with unbroken enthusiasm. Guided by the basic values of joie de vivre in all its colors, the entire Sperlhof team strives to bring more colorfulness to life on vacation at the hotel in Upper Austria. To show new sides of beauty and joy - and to inspire all guests through enjoyment in a new form.
